The Contemplative Approach to Care for the Dying with Kirsten DeLeo
|
Thursday July 23, 2015
10 am Pacific/1 pm Eastern
Join Dr. Karen Wyatt and her special guest Kirsten DeLeo, a faculty member of the Spiritual Care Program, which is a non-denominational, international outreach program that offers training and care in the arenas of both living and dying. They will discuss the contemplative approach to end-of-life care and the certificate program offered by the Spiritual Care Program.
In this interview you will learn:
- The meaning of spiritual care for the dying and why it is important for every patient
- How the contemplative approach benefits both patients and providers of care
- The professional and public courses available through the Spiritual Care Program, including the "Contemplative End-of-Life Care Certificate"
Kirsten DeLeo is faculty of “Contemplative End-of-Life Care", a professional certificate launched at Naropa University in 2003 in partnership with Rigpa’s Spiritual Care Program.
Drawing on over 20 years of experience in accompanying terminally ill people and their families, Kirsten teaches seminars and retreats for healthcare professionals and the public. In her teaching, Kirsten integrates time-tested - and now empirically supported - contemplative methods such as mindfulness, meditation and other practical skills to enhance empathy, care and communication. Kirsten is trained in Hakomi-bodycentered psychotherapy and has completed a three-year meditation retreat. She has published numerous articles on the contemplative approach, and is a senior trainer in Rigpa’s Spiritual Care Program.
Inspired by the acclaimed classic "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" by Sogyal Rinpoche and under the patronage of HH Dalai Lama, the Program offers secular contemplative-based education working together with hospitals, hospices and universities in more than 10 countries. It also runs two Care Centers, one on the West Coast of Ireland and another one in Germany which will open its doors end of this year.
